As the leaves change, Utah is diving headfirst into fall. With temperatures swinging between 40 and 80 degrees, the season is unpredictable, but I can’t get enough of it. I am absolutely obsessed with fall—the crisp air, scenic canyon drives, cozy sweaters, haunted houses, pumpkin patches, and spooky movies put me in an untouchable mood. There’s something magical about this time of year that I can’t feel any other season. But with the abrupt weather changes, I’ve noticed that many people are struggling with their skin. After fine-tuning our skincare routines all summer, the sudden cold, dry air seems determined to throw everything off balance. Fortunately, there are a few adjustments I like to make to help my skin transition seamlessly into fall. Let’s dive into fall skincare!
Switch To a Creamy Cleanser
One of the best changes you can make is swapping to a creamy cleanser in the morning. If you’re not already washing your face in the morning—start now! Morning cleansing removes bacteria, sweat, oil, and any debris that’s built up on your pillowcase overnight. Plus, if you’re using a retinoid in your nighttime routine, it’s essential to wash it off in the morning. Skipping this step and heading out into the sun could lead to irritation or even sunburn. A creamy cleanser not only gently cleanses but also delivers a much-needed hydration boost, which is crucial for combating fall dryness. Personally, I love how my skin feels after using a creamy cleanser—it’s never tight or dry! My go-to right now is the Barrier Balance Cleanser by Face Reality. Designed for acne-prone skin, it works wonders for all skin types, helping to balance your skin’s microbiome, which is key for overall skin health.
2. Increase Exfoliation
Fall is the ideal time to increase exfoliation and start incorporating treatments like chemical peels. I make it a habit to get a peel every 2-4 weeks starting in September, ensuring my skin is glowing and baby-soft by the holiday season. As temperatures drop, our skin tends to become drier, making it essential to slough off dead skin cells and reveal fresh, glowing skin. It’s always best to consult with a professional to determine the right exfoliation method for you, but here are some of my favorites:
- For non-inflamed acne or mature skin, I recommend a scrub like Peptide Micro Scrub by Glymed or Mandelic Scrub by Face Reality.
- For inflamed acne or sensitive skin, chemical exfoliants such as Mandelic Acid Serum by Face Reality or Idyllic Cleanser by Glymed are great options. You can even opt for a retinoid.
- Enzyme exfoliation is another gentle, effective option. I’m obsessed with Hydrating Enzyme Treatment and Enzyme Exfoliating Powder by Epicutis—both are perfect for sensitive skin.
3. Boost Hydration and Moisture
Since you’ll be increasing exfoliation, it’s equally important to balance that out with moisture and hydration. The real secret to glowing skin is achieving the perfect balance between exfoliating and moisturizing. A well-functioning skin barrier is key to locking in moisture, especially as the weather gets colder. Here are a few products I swear by:
- Restorative HA by Hydrinity
All of these are safe for acne-prone skin, pregnancy-safe, and effective at tackling dryness.
Final Thoughts
Everyone’s skin is different, and we all react to seasonal changes in our own way. The best approach is to consult with an esthetician to tailor a regimen that suits your unique needs. By striking the right balance between exfoliation and hydration, your skin will transition smoothly into fall without missing a beat.
